Reading Notes: Bible Women I (extra credit reading)

 Eve: - God never said what fruit the tree bore..

• I always thought the serpent just appeared, but the Lord has made the serpent

• She just gave it to Adam, there was not much coercion involved it seems

• Adam is mentioned first when talking about both man and woman

Sarah: - she heard she would conceive but did not know when

• had a son very old in age

Hagar: - handmaid of Abraham and Sarah

• Sarah convinced her to bare a son by Abraham before Isaac’s birth

• Hagar married Abraham to have sex with him

• Sarah hated her for having a child even though Sarah was the one that set it up

• Sarah kicked out Hagar and Ishmael :(

• God promised to do something big with Ishmael

Rebekah: - She was sought after to be the wife of Isaac

• She was kind to the servant of Isaac 

• She left her family to wed him

• Like sarah, Rebekah had trouble conceiving so they went to the Lord

• TWINS

• Esau was more cunning and “stronger”, Jacob was very plain

• Rebekah loved Jacob and Isaac loved Esau

Rachel: - She was a shepherd girl

• I think it is weird that he didn’t even introduce himself before he kissed her..

• There seems to be quite a bit of interfamilial marriages 

• While Jacob loved Rachel he was given Leah because it was customary for the eldest to be married first

• For Rachel to be married she would have to wait another 7 years

Leah: - Leah was hated and because of this the Lord allowed her to bare children and not Rachel

• Rachel became jealous of Leah and her ability to conceive

• Rachel had Jacob have sex with her maid Bilhah to conceive a child so that Rachel could have him

• Did they keep giving Jacob people to conceive children with?

Potifar’s Wife: - liar!

Jephthah’s Daughter: - I have never heard of her before

• She has no name

• His daughter was the offering as she was first out of the house

• She left and we’ll say mourned and partied for 2 months before she was killed
